David Berding / Getty ImagesJuly 1, 2026 Updated 11:21 am EDTVeteran point guard Mike Conley has agreed to a deal with the Boston Celtics, according to a league source who spoke on condition of anonymity because the deal has not been completed. The 38-year-old averaged 4.5 points in 18.4 minutes in two separate stints with the Minnesota Timberwolves last season. He was traded away in the deadline deal to acquire Ayo Dosunmu, but returned to Minnesota after the Charlotte Hornets released him.Conley left an indelible mark on the Timberwolves in his three and a half seasons. He came in a trade from Utah and almost single-handedly got the Wolves and Rudy Gobert on the same page.
His voice in the locker room was essential, helping Anthony Edwards, Jaden McDaniels and Naz Reid grow up in the league. He was also hugely important as a quarterback and clutch shot maker on the court, never more so than with his 3-point shooting in the victory over the Denver Nuggets in Game 7 of the second round of the playoffs in 2024.He was dubbed “Minnesota Mike” for his connection to the franchise and the city and will be greatly missed. But the Wolves are moving on with LaMelo Ball, Ayo Dosunmu and Bones Hyland as the next-gen point guard rotation.Eight years ago, while still the Boston Celtics head coach, Brad Stevens called it a joke that Conley had never made an All-Star team. Conley did make one later, and he’s no longer a candidate to reach another at this stage of his career. Even so, Stevens’ respect for the veteran guard has persisted.“He’s just a winner,” Stevens said at the time. “And that’s all that really has ever mattered to him.”Jul 1, 2026Connections: Sports EditionSpot the pattern.
