July 1 (UPI) -- United Nations High Commission for Refugees and other international organizations warned that Venezuela's humanitarian crisis is deteriorating rapidly following the twin earthquakes that struck the country on June 24.
The collapse of basic services, severe food shortages and the loss of critical infrastructure have deepened an emergency affecting a population that was already facing widespread humanitarian needs.
Initial assessments conducted by the UNHCR between June 26 and June 27 in La Guaira, the Capital District, Miranda, Aragua and Carabobo states confirmed a rapid deterioration in living conditions across the affected areas.
The agency warned of growing protection risks for nearly 16,000 displaced families who lack safe shelter, clean drinking water and electricity. It estimated that 39% of those families are living on the streets, in public squares or in makeshift shelters without basic sanitation.
