Bird poo on your car can be a real pain to clean off, but it can be done without harsh chemicals or expensive products — and you likely already have everything you need at home15:50, 01 Jul 2026Anyone who's owned a car knows the irritating moment when you return to find that a pigeon, seagull or other feathered culprit has left their mark all over your pride and joy.I can vividly recall returning to my motor while visiting a coastal town and encountering that exact problem on several occasions. The typical reaction is to curse under your breath, before grabbing some cleaning solution to scrub it away, then chucking the mess in the bin — but is there a smarter approach? Well, if the poo have had time to dry on the paintwork, there certainly is.According to The Times' motoring guru Tim Shallcross, there's a more affordable and less chemically harsh method for removing bird mess from any surface of your vehicle. It simply requires a touch of patience.Mr Shallcross suggested using something readily available in your own kitchen — a microfibre cloth. When paired with warm water, it can work wonders. He explained: "You can use water, warm if possible. Soak a cloth, ideally a microfibre cloth, in water and lay it over the spot for a couple of minutes."If the droppings have hardened, five to ten minutes might be necessary. Then rinse the cloth, get in soaking wet again and dab the dropping away, don't rub it."If the mess doesn't all come off at the first attempt, soak the remainder with the cloth again for another few minutes."However, Mr Shallcross advised against using kitchen roll, as it's "abrasive" and liable to break apart – leaving bits stuck to the car and creating even more mess to clear up.Naturally, there are also specialist cleaning products available to tackle the issue, which Mr Shallcross helpfully details beneath his own guidance.Article continues belowWhichever approach one chooses, it's vital to remove the droppings as quickly as possible. This is because bird droppings contain uric acid, which gradually corrodes the paintwork.Speaking to the Daily Express in 2022, Andrew Jervis of ClickMechanic warned: "Bird mess is one of the unfortunate inevitabilities of owning a vehicle. Yes, it can be unpleasant to deal with, but failing to clean it off promptly can cause damage to the paintwork and land you with an equally unpleasant bill further down the line."With a PH level of around four, it can burn through the clear coat top layer and eat away at the paintwork. The best thing to do is clean it off as soon as possible with a homemade mixture of baking soda and hot water, let it soak for 10 minutes and then simply wipe off."
