FLOWERY BRANCH, Ga. — Jahan Dotson has never caught 50 passes in an NFL season. He hasn’t reached 20 catches in either of the last two seasons. He has averaged 380 receiving yards per season. That has not diminished his belief in himself heading into his fifth NFL season.“I want to be one of the greatest,” Atlanta’s new wide receiver said. “I’m not afraid (of saying that). I was talking to Jessie Bates, and he was talking about wanting to be the best who ever played, and I’m comfortable with those sort of things. I want to be one of the best in the league. I want to show my talent. I haven’t really gotten to do that.”Dotson joined the Falcons this offseason as a free agent on a two-year, $15 million deal. For Atlanta, it was an affordable option to bolster a thin wide receiving corps. For Dotson, it represents a third chance to prove he’s the player many people thought he was when he was a first-round pick by the Washington Commanders in 2022.“The big thing for me was going to a team where I felt like my talent could be showcased,” Dotson said. “I learned a lot in my first four years in the NFL from some great receivers and great coaches, but I feel like now is really my time to put my talents on display.”The Falcons are a land of opportunity for pass catchers. Drake London is the only wide receiver on the roster who had more than seven catches in Atlanta a year ago.“It gives him a chance to showcase what he’s capable of doing and what he was kind of building up to in his time at Washington, and it fits our offense,” first-year Falcons general manager Ian Cunningham said.Drake London's best football still on the horizon?Robert MaysDotson immediately steps into the starting lineup and very well could end up as Atlanta’s No. 2 target among wide receivers, putting a career year within reach. Dotson’s rookie year has been his best, and it was just OK. After being selected out of Penn State with the 16th pick (just eight spots behind London), Dotson had 523 yards and seven touchdowns that first season. The next year, he had a career-best 49 catches for 518 yards and four touchdowns, and Washington traded him to division rival Philadelphia in the offseason along with a fifth-round pick in exchange for a third-round pick and two seventh-round picks.
Forgotten first-round pick Jahan Dotson thinks he can be ‘one of the best’ in Atlanta
Dotson was a first-round pick in 2022 but has averaged less than 400 yards a season. Now, he's got a third chance with the Falcons.
