ST. LOUIS — For those wanting to hear Alexander Steen’s take on building the St. Louis Blues and the team’s recent roster decisions, the muzzle has finally been lifted.Outgoing general manager Doug Armstrong was the one who spoke on those things before Tuesday, but with Steen being introduced as the 12th GM in franchise history, he’s now in position to share his thoughts publicly.Less than an hour before Steen’s news conference began, the Blues announced that they were putting forward Jonathan Drouin on conditional waivers for the purpose of buying out his contract.Drouin, 31, was acquired in the trade that sent captain Brayden Schenn to the New York Islanders last season. He had one season remaining on his deal with a $4 million average annual value. The Blues will be on the hook for two-thirds of that ($2.67 million), which will be paid out over the next two seasons for a salary-cap hit of $1.33 million each season.Drouin, whose salary the Islanders were looking to dump, and the Blues obliged to facilitate the Schenn trade, had just one goal and three points in nine games with the Blues.“It’s a difficult decision,” Steen said. “Dru was a professional, great teammate. He’s got a specific set of skills. He’s a defined player, and we just felt that we weren’t going to be able to provide him with the opportunity to excel in his role with the team. We weighed it a lot, and at the end of the day, this was the decision that was made.”
