A couple in Malaysia were rushed to the hospital after they consumed poisonous wild mushrooms by mistaking them for rare edible ones, officials said. The duo, Muhd Basir Abidudin Abd Razak and Intan Nabila Mazelam, both 28, fell sick within hours on Sunday after cooking and eating the foraged mushrooms they falsely believed were Termitomyces, an edible variety native to southeast Asia. The variant is also known as a yearly mushroom which is found growing on termite mounds after heavy rain.Mahadzir Abd Hamid, chair of the humanitarian and emergency rescue squad, Yayasan Jariah Malaysia Volunteer Brigade, said they received an emergency call for the incident around 4.40pm.A representative image shows Termitomyces growing in the wild (Getty Images/iStockphoto)When the team of rescuers reached the couple’s house in Padang Besar town, they found them on the floor in a bathroom, suffering from symptoms of food poisoning. Both were seen vomiting and suffering from diarrhoea.Mr Hamid said two ambulances with five personnel were sent to the scene of the incident and reached there within 12 minutes.“Immediate rescue assistance was carried out by five personnel using special equipment,” he said on Sunday after the rescue. The rescuers saw the house “covered in vomit and faeces” and the couple in a dire condition where they were unable to stand, reported Malay Mail.It added that the rescue turned challenging as the victims each weighed more than 150kg. The brigade had to deploy six of their crew members and villagers to rush the victims to the hospital. The couple was sent to the Daerah Sik hospital in two different ambulances, the official said.He added that the woman had contacted her mother and brother-in-law before cooking the foraged mushrooms and asked them if they appeared safe to eat. The family members reportedly told them they believed that the mushrooms were edible. It is not immediately clear how the couple sourced the mushrooms and what variant was consumed.
