Three people have died in Mexico City as locals celebrated Mexico's 2-0 win over Ecuador in the World Cup, local authorities said.

A 44-year-old man, a 48-year-old woman, and a 19-year-old woman died from asphyxiation, according to the city's health secretary.

Emergency crews were called to the Juárez area of the capital after three people were reported to be unconscious.

Paramedics, firefighters, and police officers were among the responders dispatched to the scene. The patients received first aid and cardiopulmonary resuscitation and were taken to hospital for specialist medical care but were later declared dead.

"We are in contact with their families to provide them with all the necessary support," Clara Brugada Molina, the head of the government of Mexico City said in a post on social media.
