Andy Burnham must not be “swayed” into cutting disability benefits if he reaches No 10, campaigners who worked with the former mayor in Greater Manchester have warned.

Burnham, expected to be the next Labour leader and prime minister, said during his successful by-election campaign that he is “not squeamish” about the need to reduce Britain’s welfare bill.

Burnham has ruled out “crude” short-term cuts, however, suggesting that reduced spending could happen over time by getting more people into work.
