Auckland's Tala restaurant, owned by Samoan chef Henry Lafi Onesemo, has become the first Samoan-owned restaurant to earn a Michelin star.

A Michelin star is one of the world's most prestigious restaurant awards, given to restaurants that serve food of an exceptionally high standard.

The Michelin Guide New Zealand 2026 ceremony was held in Auckland, where hundreds of restaurants were recognised, celebrating their quality and creativity.

Speaking with reporters on the scene, Onesemo said he hopes the recognition opens more doors for Samoan food internationally.

"I'm very happy for the culture, I'm very thankful that New Zealand is ready for a Samoan restaurant because when New Zealand started celebrating it, I think the world noticed."
