Contreras had his head down, but looked up at Cavalli when he heard something.Contreras, who was also ejected from Monday’s game, began walking toward the mound, appearing to say, “Are you talking to me?” as Nationals catcher Keibert Ruiz put his hand on Contreras’ shoulder and Red Sox third base coach Chad Epperson approached to intervene. Contreras then started to charge the mound as several teammates poured out of the dugout and tried to hold him back.
It appeared as though Contreras tried to throw his helmet at Cavalli, but it instead hit Nationals first baseman Andrés Chaparro, who was then enraged. Nationals right-hander Miles Mikolas and Red Sox outfielder Nate Eaton also got into a scuffle on the side of the fray after Mikolas tried to hold back Contreras, a former teammate with the St. Louis Cardinals; once Eaton grabbed Mikolas, the veteran threw Eaton to the grass.
