EAST RUTHERFORD, N.J. — Kylian Mbappe continues his goal tear at the 2026 FIFA World Cup.In the 45th minute of Tuesday's round of 32 match against Sweden, Mbappe provided France with a 1-0 lead just before halftime by beating Blågult goaltender Jacob Widell Zetterstrom at the net after dancing his way through Sweden's defense.It was Mbappe's ninth goal in a World Cup knockout round, a tournament record for an individual player. It was also his fifth goal of the 2026 World Cup. He has now surpassed Germany’s Miroslav Klose for the second-most goals in men's World Cup history, behind only Lionel Messi’s 19 World Cup goals for Argentina.Mbappe's goal ended the first half for France and Mbappe on a high note after both came up short of finding the back of the net earlier in the match. In the 20th minute, Mbappe broke off from Sweden's defense at midfield and had nothing but open grass, but his goal was waived off for offside. Just a little bit after that, Mbappe hit the post on a shot and briefly started his post-goal celebration.It's the third game of this tournament that the Real Madrid forward has scored for France. His first goal on Tuesday adds to his France all-time scoring record, as it marked his 61st goal for Les Bleus in his career.But in true Mbappe fashion, that wouldn't be the last goal from him on the day.In the 74th minute, Mbappe moved within one goal of Messi when he buried a shot past Widell Zetterstrom for his 18th career World Cup goal. It's the third brace of the tournament for Mbappe.Mbappe helped lead France to the knockout round of the World Cup for the fourth consecutive cycle. Les Bleus won Group I with nine points after picking up wins over Senegal, Iraq and Norway.Should France defeat Sweden on Tuesday, Les Bleus would play Paraguay on Saturday, July 4 at Lincoln Financial Field in Philadelphia.
