In what may be the last significant policy decision of his premiership, Sir Keir Starmer has announced how much extra money he has found to spend on defence over the next four years.

He said the £15 billion defence investment plan would pay for high tech weaponry to transform the armed services. Some of the money comes from cuts to capital spending on roads and energy.

The former Defence Secretary John Healey resigned two weeks ago before the increased spending was announced, saying it was not enough to keep the country safe.
