New Delhi: Congress on Tuesday condemned the preventive arrest of a party delegation led by its Uttar Pradesh unit president Ajay Rai before its planned visit to the Ram temple in Ayodhya, where it wanted to pay obeisance as well as enquire about the alleged embezzlement of donations. The Opposition demanded the arrest of people connected with various trusts of the Ram temple, including Champat Rai and Nripendra Misra, besides custodial interrogation of the temple staff members already arrested in the case."Today we wanted to have a darshan of Lord Shri Ram, but the BJP government has arrested us and confined us in the guest house," Ajay Rai said in a statement after his arrest. "In the city of Ayodhya, there are instances of fund embezzlement and land scams taking place. Our demand is that the small employees who have been sent to jail should be taken into police remand and interrogated. Cases should be registered against all these people - Nripendra Misra, Anil Mishra, Gopal Rao, Champat Rai and Govind Giri - and they should be arrested. The trust should be immediately dissolved and people nominated by the Shankaracharyas should be included in the trust, who are connected to religion."Party spokesperson Supriya Shrinate said the alleged donation theft meant that the temple trust violated the standard operating procedure prepared with State Bank of India for counting donations. She referred to complaints from various devotees to the effect that they still hadn't received receipts from the trust for their donations.
