The Calcutta High Court on Tuesday refused to grant relief to Trinamool national general secretary Abhishek Banerjee, declining his plea for exemption from providing voice samples to the Criminal Investigation Department (CID).The samples were sought in connection with a case alleging that Abhishek made violence-inciting remarks during a campaign rally ahead of the West Bengal elections.The CID had sought his voice sample in connection with a case relating to his alleged "DJ remark." Abhishek had moved the HC challenging a trial court order directing him to provide his voice sample as part of the CID's investigation. Banerjee was scheduled to appear before the trial court by 5 pm on Tuesday to provide the sample. However, he approached the HC challenging the CID's move.Justice Trithankar Ghosh observed that Abhishek had already been granted interim protection from coercive police action, including arrest, in the main case. Therefore, there was no need to grant fresh protection from submitting voice samples. The judge also announced his decision to recuse himself from further hearing the matter.
