The screening of the documentary ‘Tirupparankundram Files’ at a preview theatre in Nungambakkam was cancelled on Tuesday following opposition from a few Hindu Munnani cadres, despite the organisers having obtained police permission. The Tamil Nadu Digital Journalists Association had organised the screening at Four Frames in Nungambakkam and had invited political leaders, including former MLAs Karunas and Thamimun Ansari, as well as actor Sathyaraj. One of the documentary’s directors, Thavam, said, “We planned the screening after obtaining due permission from the police. The documentary has already been screened at several places and has been watched by many people. However, members of Hindu Munnani contacted the theatre management and demanded that the screening be cancelled. A few of them also came to the venue and insisted that the documentary should not be screened, citing vague reasons. Although the police were deployed here for bandobust duty, they did not prevent them. As a result, the screening was cancelled.”Later, Karunas and Thamimun Ansari told reporters that the documentary had been available on social media platforms such as YouTube for a long time and had been viewed by lakhs of people. They said the film contained no content that promoted religious hatred or targeted any religion.Karunas said the documentary highlights the local history of Tirupparankundram and surrounding areas, including traditions in places such as Usilampatti, where people belonging to different faiths, including Hindus and Muslims, share cultural ties and participate in the worship of local deities. He said he would bring the issue to the attention of the Minister for Information and Publicity and expressed confidence that the Chief Minister would take action against those attempting to politicise the issue.
