South Africa - Johannesburg - 29 June 2026 - Scores of Soweto residents, including hostel dwellers and izinduna, have once again marched in their numbers to march against illegal immigrants, just hours before the self-imposed June 30 deadline calling for illegal migrants to leave the country.
Concerns mount as healthcare professionals across South Africa are sounding the alarm over a growing humanitarian crisis, after escalating xenophobic violence, displacement, and coordinated efforts to block access to clinics leave vulnerable migrant communities in severe danger.
Driven by the '30 June deadline' promoted by organised anti-immigrant groups for undocumented migrants to leave the country, the movement has created a widespread climate of fear.
In response, medical professionals, public health experts, and rights organisations are calling for immediate government action and actively mobilising emergency volunteer networks to provide critical care.
A newly formed coalition, Healthcare Workers Against Xenophobia (HWAX), has urgently called on the National and Provincial Departments of Health, the Department of Home Affairs, and municipalities to step in.
