The Legal Coordination Committee (LCC) for Government Doctors has urged Chief Minister to take measures to enforce strict laws against assault on doctors, ensure speedy justice and punishment, and provide government hospitals with surveillance cameras, panic buttons for emergencies, and adequate police security. The association said that the National Doctors’ Day is observed on July 1, with this year’s theme being “Behind the Mask: Who Heals the Healers?”. It said that doctors work in unsafe and intense working environments, are overworked and face burnout. In developed countries, a doctor sees a maximum of 20 to 25 patients a day. But in Tamil Nadu, they see an unlimited number of patients. For instance, the UK, with a population of 75 million, has over 1,00,000 doctors. However, Tamil Nadu, with nearly the same population, has only 19,000 government doctors, the association said. The association urged the government to double the number of doctor positions in the State. Noting that proper wages are a basic right, LCC said that as per Government Order 354, government doctors must be granted pay band four within 12 years, or be provided salaries on par with the Central government.
