SportHorse racingRoyal AscotWilliam Muir, who trained Pyledriver to win the Ascot showpiece in partnership with Chris Grassick, did not hide his opinion of newcomer Breacher at Salisbury16:08, 30 Jun 2026The trainer of 2022 King George VI and Queen Elizabeth Stakes winner Pyledriver believes he has uncovered an even better horse.‌William Muir, who trains in partnership with Chris Grassick, enjoyed his best moments to date with underdog star Pyledriver. His middle distance champion won over £1 million in prize-money, his eight victories including two wins at Royal Ascot, plus the Group 1 races, the Coronation Cup and King George in which he beat Arc winner Torquator Tasso.‌Pyledriver had announced himself with a first time out success at Salisbury in July 2019 when he scored at odds of 50-1.‌Almost seven years later his stable sent out Breacher, a son of Cracksman, to contest a 7f maiden for which another newcomer, the Ralph Beckett-trained son of Frankel, Squadron, was the odds-on favourite.Squadron had his chance under Colin Keane but after taking the lead, he was joined and passed by Breacher who went on to score by two and a half lengths. He became only the fifth winner of the year for the Muir and Grassick stable.‌“My horses have just been out of sorts a bit and we can’t put our finger on it,” said Muir. “You can run them and then they run bad and their bloods are wrong the next day.“This horse wasn’t right and I withdrew him from his other race. His blood was okay two days ago so we said we had to go. He’s the best I’ve ever had.”‌Breacher had galloped with Ebt’s Guard, a 104-rated older horse who finished fourth in the Royal Hunt Cup this month.Muir went on: “This horse worked with Ebt’s Guard off level and went away from him before the Hunt Cup.Article continues below“I said coming here if this runs like he gallops they won’t beat him. I don’t care what’s in the race, they won’t beat him.“He works like a proper good horse. Rob Haim has been one of my first owners. He bred him and he didn’t get accepted into any of the sales. I hope he’s top class for him because he deserves it.”Choose Daily Mirror as a 'Preferred Source' on Google News for quick access to the news you value.‌King GeorgeCoronation CupRoyal AscotRoyal FamilyHorsesAscot racecourse
