The Directorate of General Education has issued a circular that teachers deployed for the Houselisting and Housing Census phase of Census 2027 from July 1 to 30 should complete their duties by utilising the holidays on Saturdays and Sundays (eight days) in the month so as to not disrupt academic activities. To compensate for working on holidays, they can avail themselves of compensatory off by October 31, 2026 with the permission of head teachers, the circular by Director of General Education Snehil Kumar Singh, following a meeting chaired by General Education Special Secretary D. Sajith Babu, said. The Kerala School Teachers’ Association (KSTA), in a statement, said the circular allowing compensatory off was the result of protests conducted by teachers with the support of the public. However, the circular was not a solution to the problems raised by the KSTA. Its main demand was to make daily wage appointments in place of teachers on Census duty to address the “academic crisis” in schools. The government, though, was silent about it.
