The Sani Pass is one of the many destinations across South Africa where you can experience proper snowfall, but be careful how you drive.
There is a unique brand of excitement that arrives with the first winter snow forecast. For South African children—and plenty of adults—snow still feels slightly magical, belonging more to Hollywood films and faraway ski holidays than a destination just a few hours' drive from home.
Yet, South Africa does get snow. While it may not fall everywhere with absolute reliability, there are specific corners of the country where July can deliver a quintessential winter escape, complete with white-capped peaks, frozen mountain passes, and the kind of bone-chilling cold that turns a fireplace from a luxury into essential infrastructure.
According to Vox Weather meteorologist Michelle du Plessis, South Africa's snowfall season typically spans from May to September, with the strongest probability of widespread falls occurring from mid-June into early August. July, she notes, stands out as the prime month for families eager to experience snow for the first time.
However, the golden rule for snow hunters is knowing exactly where to look, as a frosty morning in a cold town is vastly different from a true snowy destination.
