TechnologyWhatsAppWhatsApp is urging users to check their settings and grab a new users name this week.10:14, 30 Jun 2026Updated 10:15, 30 Jun 2026WhatsApp is about to fix one of its biggest issues, and users are being urged to act as soon as possible to stay up to date. As most users are aware, the only way to currently chat on the service is by exchanging phone numbers - which is not always ideal. Now, after years of waiting, the Meta-owned app is finally changing that quirk with the introduction of unique usernames. Once the feature is available, users will be able to share this instead of giving out their phone number.WhatsApp explained that sharing a phone number can feel like a big step when meeting new people, such as classmates, neighbours, event contacts, or members of group chats.“Sometimes you just want to chat without handing over your digits,” WhatsApp said, explaining the reason behind the new feature. The update will also make group conversations more private. For example, users joining community chats or social groups will be able to participate without immediately revealing their phone number to strangers.WhatsApp has confirmed that users can begin reserving their preferred usernames ahead of the full launch. Because billions of people use the platform, many usernames may be claimed quickly, so early reservations will give users a better chance of getting the name they want and not missing out.To reserve a username, users need to update WhatsApp to the latest version and go to:Settings > Account > UsernameArticle continues belowThe feature will be released gradually over the coming months, and WhatsApp will notify users when usernames become available in their region.Choose Daily Mirror as a 'Preferred Source' on Google News for quick access to the news you value.WhatsAppApps
