St Catherine's Place was dubbed the 'UK's saddest shopping centre' before a £10 million regeneration project is set to transform the site into something new08:41, 30 Jun 2026What was once a beloved shopping hotspot for locals gradually became known as the 'UK's saddest' centre, left derelict and vandalised after years of steady decline.‌Many will fondly recall the heyday of St Catherine's Place shopping centre in Bedminster, Bristol, while others will only know it for its sorry demise.‌After it earned the unenviable title of the UK's saddest shopping centre, it wasn't long before the site was snapped up with hopes of breathing new life into it.‌Once home to well-known retailers such as The Works, Shoe Zone and the British Heart Foundation, alongside a welcoming café and an independent florist, the tenants slowly but surely vacated the premises. By 2018, just six shops remained, a figure that plummeted to three by 2020, and by 2023, a single sole trader was left, rattling around the deserted centre. As the building grew increasingly empty, graffiti spread across the walls and roof of the South Bristol shopping centre, with old wires dangling from the ceiling completing the bleak picture. The abandoned site presented a prime opportunity for redevelopment and has since undergone a remarkable transformation, with much more still to come.‌RedevelopmentThe council's website states that Bedminster Green is a development area comprising five plots, all currently in the process of being redeveloped to deliver housing and other 'mixed use' schemes.Driving the project is Firmstone Developments, who set out with the aim of ensuring the centre's overhaul would play a 'key role' in regenerating the surrounding area.According to the council's website, the £10 million Bedminster Green development scheme includes constructing a mixture of new homes, restoring the River Malago, improving public areas and making walking and cycling simpler and safer.‌When the plans were unveiled, a spokesperson for developer Firmstone said: "St Catherine's Place will play a key role in the regeneration of East Street, Bedminster. We have a vision to revitalise this neglected part of Bedminster by building new homes, creating vibrant new public spaces and frontages, and promoting a more positive future for the local residents."As of last August, 2025, the initial flats on the former site were available for purchase as part of a collection of fourteen apartments between East Street and Dalby Avenue. The development, now called Catherine's Yard, had one bedroom flats on the market for £190,000, according to the previous Rightmove listing.Article continues belowFirmstone has planning consent to reportedly construct a total of 180 new flats in separate blocks on the same land surrounding the former shopping centre. However, around the same time the flats became available, BristolLive reporters visited the location and observed minimal progress taking place. Residents for the initial fourteen flats were anticipated to have moved in by the autumn of 2025, with the remainder of the site being developed at a later stage.
