Minister Piyush Goyal at the launch of the UPI services at Eurobank headquarters in Athens.India’s Unified Payments Interface (UPI) has been launched in Greece, marking another step in the global expansion of the country’s digital payment ecosystem, commerce and industry minister Piyush Goyal said on Tuesday, 30 June.The launch was demonstrated at the headquarters of Eurobank in Athens through a partnership between Eurobank and NPCI International Payments Limited (NIPL). The minister, who is on an official visit to Greece, witnessed the live demonstration alongside Eurobank CEO Fokion Karavias and Fairfax Digital Services CEO Sanjay Tugnait.He added that UPI’s growing global acceptance reflects international trust in India’s technology-led solutions, which are creating value beyond borders and strengthening partnerships for shared growth and prosperity.With UPI now live in Greece, eligible customers will be able to make instant, secure and seamless payments, while transaction costs are expected to fall significantly compared with conventional transfer methods.The move comes weeks after India expanded UPI access at Galeries Lafayette Nice Masséna in France. In 2024, UPI was introduced at the Eiffel Tower, allowing Indian visitors to use digital payments at the iconic landmark.Greece is the latest addition to the list of countries accepting UPI, which now includes Singapore, United Arab Emirates, France, Mauritius, Nepal, Bhutan, Qatar, Sri Lanka and Cambodia, enabling Indian travellers to make payments abroad through familiar platforms.
