HDFC Bank’s board on June 29, 2026 approved the appointment of Puneet Sharma as Chief Financial Officer-Designate effective September 1, 2026, with him taking over as full CFO from December 1, 2026, the bank said in a regulatory filing. The board also approved Jigar Shah’s appointment as General Counsel-Designate effective August 20, 2026, moving to General Counsel from October 1, 2026. Both will join the bank’s Senior Management Personnel from their respective dates of joining.The appointment confirms market speculation following Sharma’s resignation from Axis Bank, announced on June 28, 2026. In his resignation letter to Axis Bank’s MD & CEO, Sharma said his original mandate of building a strong finance team, robust controls and a resilient balance sheet was now largely complete, allowing him to move to the next phase of his career. Axis Bank said Sharma would be relieved of duties by the close of business on August 31, 2026, after which he ceases to be a key managerial personnel of the bank.Sharma brings over 26 years of experience across banking, financial services and strategy. He served as Group Executive and CFO of Axis Bank, where he also oversaw Investor Relations, Legal and Secretarial functions. He was previously CFO at Tata Capital and earlier held leadership roles at Citibank and The Boston Consulting Group. He is a Chartered Accountant with a Post Graduate Programme in Management from the Indian School of Business, Hyderabad. HDFC Bank noted he meets RBI’s 2025 governance norms for CFO appointments and will become a Key Managerial Person under the Companies Act once he assumes the CFO role.Jigar Shah, the incoming General Counsel, has over three decades of experience in legal, compliance and regulatory roles, including stints at KKR India, JPMorgan Chase and Deutsche Bank. He holds an LLB from the University of Leicester and is a qualified Solicitor in England and Wales.Separately, Bandhan Bank also announced the resignation of its CFO, Rajeev Mantri, effective September 25, 2026, with reports suggesting he may move to Axis Bank.Published on June 30, 2026
