Image via: Gregory Shamus/ Getty ImagesThe possibility of a Stephen Curry-LeBron James partnership has resurfaced after reports linked the Golden State Warriors to Anthony Davis, but the blockbuster scenario hinges on one major obstacle: Jimmy Butler. Multiple reports over the past several days have connected Golden State to a complex series of moves that would require Butler's contract to be included in a trade package, even as his camp insists the organization remains committed to him.The speculation has intensified as the Warriors look for ways to maximize the closing years of Curry's championship window. If Golden State can acquire Davis and subsequently lure James in free agency, it could reshape the NBA landscape. For Butler, however, the same pursuit creates uncertainty just months after suffering a torn ACL.How the Warriors can bring Stephen Curry, LeBron James and Anthony Davis togetherStephen Curry, LeBron James and Anthony Davis. Image via: Rob Schumacher-USA TODAY SportsThe reported blueprint is ambitious but financially complicated.According to veteran NBA reporter Sam Amico, the Washington Wizards are open to trading Anthony Davis this offseason. Golden State has reportedly emerged as one of the teams exploring that possibility, viewing Davis as both a championship-caliber addition and a potential recruiting tool for LeBron James. The challenge is matching Davis' $58.5 million salary.Jimmy Butler, who will earn $56.8 million next season, represents Golden State's only realistic salary match. Reports indicate Butler would likely have to be included in any Davis trade, although Washington reportedly has little interest in taking on the injured six-time All-Star because he is expected to miss much of next season while recovering from ACL surgery. That means a third team would likely become necessary if Golden State wants to complete the transaction. The Warriors also possess four unprotected first-round picks that could be used to strengthen a package, though it remains unclear how much of their future the front office is willing to sacrifice. If Davis arrives, another financial domino could fall.Draymond Green's decision to decline his player option reportedly creates a path for Golden State to use the non-taxpayer mid-level exception, potentially allowing the Warriors to pursue James if the four-time MVP is willing to accept a significant pay cut.The appeal is obvious. James and Davis won the 2020 NBA championship together with the Los Angeles Lakers, while James has frequently spoken about his admiration for Curry's game. A roster featuring Curry, James, Davis and Green would instantly become one of the league's most experienced championship cores. What would a Golden trio of Stephen Curry, LeBron James and Anthony Davis mean for Jimmy Butler?Jimmy Butler. Image via: Todd Kirkland/ Getty ImagesFor all the excitement surrounding the rumored superteam, Butler has become the player caught in the middle. His agent, Bernie Lee, addressed the growing speculation in comments to ESPN's Anthony Slater, making it clear that Golden State has communicated a very different message internally."I don't want to get into a constant cycle of responding to this stuff," Lee said, before adding that the Warriors have been "resolute" in their plan to support Butler through rehab and continue with him in pursuit of a championship.Lee's statement attempted to calm rumors that Butler was already being positioned as trade bait. But Butler himself also acknowledged the business reality of the NBA."If I get traded, I get traded," Butler said. "Their job is to win. Can I help them do that? Yes."The situation becomes even more complicated because Washington reportedly does not want Butler, meaning Golden State would need another franchise capable of absorbing his salary while satisfying league trade rules. How would the trade scenario impact the Warriors? From a basketball perspective, adding Davis and James would significantly raise Golden State's championship ceiling.Davis remains one of the NBA's premier interior defenders and frontcourt scorers despite ongoing durability concerns. James, entering his 24th NBA season, continues to perform at an elite level while bringing unmatched postseason experience.Combined with Curry and Green, the Warriors would field four future Hall of Famers who collectively own multiple NBA championships and decades of playoff success. There are significant risks, however.Age and health would immediately become the defining storyline. James is entering his age-41 season, Curry turns 39, Green is 37 and Davis has battled injuries throughout much of the last six years. Financially, using the non-taxpayer mid-level exception would also hard-cap Golden State at the first apron, limiting roster flexibility throughout the season.
