Roberta Metsola says she's always ready to fight – but Parliament's powers can be boosted by other means
Europeans do not want to see EU institutions in Brussels attacking each other in public, Roberta Metsola, the president of the European Parliament, told Euractiv in an interview.
The European quarter has been gripped in recent weeks by an escalating turf war over who should lead EU foreign policy between Ursula von der Leyen’s European Commission and the European External Action Service (EEAS) run by Kaja Kallas.
António Costa, who chairs the European Council, was also embroiled in a briefing war with some EU leaders about his push to set up a Kremlin hotline at a recent summit as part of what was seen as a bid to speak for Europe.
“Nobody wins by finger-pointing, and it doesn’t work if we don’t speak with one voice,” Metsola told Euractiv’s flagship newsletter Rapporteur.
