Interior Secretary Doug Burgum was roasted on social media for giving impractical advice to Americans traveling for the Fourth of July weekend. “My last thing, on a piece of good news, I would tell people, if you’re concerned about the price of gas, of course it’s dropping again this week; President Trump, his energy policies helping lower the price of energy,” Burgum said to Fox News host Trey Gowdy on Sunday. “But if you’re gonna gas up, here’s a tip: gas up in a red state.” “On average, nationally right now this weekend it’s 53 cents cheaper per gallon to fill up your car in a red state than it is in a blue state,” he added. While Burgum is, on the whole, correct that Republican-majority states often have lower gas prices than Democratic-majority states, the practicality of his suggestion was quickly called out on social media. Some critics relayed that it was impossible to avoid inflated gas prices due to President Donald Trump’s war in Iran and the subsequent closing of the Strait of Hormuz that sent global oil prices skyrocketing. Others pointed out how ridiculous it was to suggest that drivers go out of their way to buy gas in specific states: Here's a tip: That's a REALLY BAD TIP.Just imagine all the gas you'd use driving to a Red state...Gas prices are up in *every* state. And in some Red states as much if not more than some Blue states. This is an idiot "tip." Showing again why @SecDBurgum has no credibility. https://t.co/0YzJzKUWiK— Robert Elisberg (@relisberg) June 29, 2026@DougBurgum it’s cute how you don’t even bother to hide your blatant partisanship. By the way, I live in a red state and gas is still high. But keep bootlicking Trump — great look. https://t.co/D3cTc0DrBR— ClaireVoyant (@BitterGirl2128) June 29, 2026Doug Burgum is the worst Secretary of the Interior ever. Worse than James Watt. A catastrophe for decency and stability in America. https://t.co/kXl3B8P333— Norman Ornstein (@NormOrnstein) June 29, 2026RelatedDonald TrumpIran warFourth Of Julygas pricesoil prices
