The alleged murder of a Thai teen by an Australian man is “horrific”, Foreign Minister Penny Wong says while confirming consular assistance is available to the suspect.Simon Peter Carman was arrested at Bangkok’s Suvarnabhumi Airport late last week in connection with the death of 17-year-old Tunchanok Donhomla.Police said they found the teen’s body “stuffed” in a suitcase by a railway track in the popular coastal city of Pattaya.Mr Carman has been charged with murder as well as charges related to moving or concealing a body and taking a minor for sexual purposes. He has denied all charges against him and claimed he acted in self-defence.“It’s a horrific case, and I think we’ve all been horrified by what has happened, and our sympathy goes to the friends and family,” Senator Wong said on Tuesday. She refused to go into details of assistance offered to Mr Carman, saying she was “bound by privacy obligations”.“We obviously provide consular assistance to Australians overseas where required,” she added.Citing police, local media reported Mr Carman agreed to pay Ms Donhomla 1000 baht ($A44) for sexual services but he offered only 500 baht when they arrived at his apartment, sparking an argument between the two.In a video message to the victim’s family, Mr Carman said Ms Donhomla’s death was “out of my control”.“I feel bad for what happened to your daughter,” he said in a video message.“It was out of my control.”Ms Donhomla’s father, Thongchai, said he was “deeply saddened”.“My daughter had no mother, so whenever she wanted anything, she would find a way herself, and she always helped me too,” he told local media. The maximum penalty for murder is death.Read related topics:Penny Wong
