Comedian Whitney Cummings wrecked President Donald Trump with a ruthless one-two punchline during Sunday night’s ceremony celebrating the Mark Twain Prize for American Humor at the Kennedy Center.Though the president handpicked guest of honor Bill Maher as the center’s self-appointed chairman, that didn’t stop Cummings from taunting Trump with a joke about his shady links to late sex offender Jeffrey Epstein. In an X post made live from the event, Deadline’s Washington, D.C., reporter Ted Johnson said the stand-up came in hot as she told attendees, “I actually heard Trump may come tonight but he couldn’t make it. He got caught in sex traffic.”President Donald Trump wasn't in the room when comedian Whitney Cummings roasted his connection to convicted sex offender Jeffrey Epstein during an event at the Kennedy Center on Sunday.Andrew Harnik via Getty ImagesAdmitting she knew the bit was going to hit a nerve, Cummings revealed she was told not to crack that joke prior to the affair, according to The New York Times. The president has long downplayed his connections to Epstein, claiming he had no knowledge of the disgraced financier’s crimes, frequently stating the two had a falling out in the mid-2000s.Though Cummings didn’t humiliate Trump to his face, the Kennedy Center crack probably stung extra hard in the wake of his name being stripped off the building just weeks ago. While the evening’s opener didn’t pull any punches, event honoree Maher appears to have gotten himself in Trump’s good graces after softening his stance on the twice-impeached president.Cummings, here at Sunday's gala for the Mark Twain Prize for American Humor, savaged Trump before revealing she was told not to use the joke beforehand.ALEX WROBLEWSKI via Getty ImagesOnce a fierce Trump critic, Maher described the president as a “gracious and measured” host after privately dining with him at the White House last year. However, Maher said he and the president’s relationship had gone back to testy while speaking to CNN on the red carpet ahead of the event.“You know, the last four or five times he’s been public about me, it’s all back to yelling and screaming. ‘I’m this, I’m terrible, I’m a lunatic liberal, I’m a lunatic, I’m a lightweight, I’m a jerk.’ So we’re back to that,” he said.
