At least three people have been confirmed dead after torrential rainfall triggered widespread flooding across Ghana’s capital, Accra, on Monday, leaving communities submerged, destroying property and disrupting movement across the city.

The flooding, which followed hours of heavy rainfall, overwhelmed roads and residential areas, prompting rescue operations by emergency responders, the military, police and firefighters.

According to authorities, about 140 millimetres of rain fell on Accra within a single day, the highest recorded in several years.

President John Mahama attributed the devastating floods partly to climate change but said human activities had also worsened the crisis.
