The approval was granted by the Federal Executive Council (FEC) as part of the first comprehensive review of the NYSC in its 53-year history.

In a historic move, the Nigerian government has approved the replacement of military operational leadership with civilian leadership at the National Youth Service Corps (NYSC), marking the most significant restructuring of the scheme since its establishment in 1973.

The approval was granted by the Federal Executive Council (FEC) as part of the first comprehensive review of the NYSC in its 53-year history.

Under the new arrangement, a civilian will head the agency's operations, while the military will continue to provide security for corps members across the country.

To give legal effect to the reforms, the Federal Executive Council directed the Attorney-General of the Federation and the Ministry of Youth to amend the NYSC Act and its regulations to reflect all the approved measures, paving the way for the implementation of the new framework.
