June 29 (UPI) -- UC Berkeley on Monday announced the launch of the Nancy Pelosi Institute for Representative Democracy.

The university in Berkeley, Calif., said in a press release the Nancy Pelosi Institute will be a nonpartisan institute for research, teaching and civic engagement. It will launch in January.

"The work of democracy is never finished, and securing its future is our greatest calling," Pelosi said. "UC Berkeley has a long, proud history of challenging the status quo and producing leaders who run toward the greatest challenges of our time."

NPI will be part of the Charles and Louise Travers Department of Political Science. It has received more than $35 million in donations toward endowment. University officials are targeting a $50 million fundraising goal.
