A 35-year-old man was arrested for allegedly stabbing his wife to death while she was asleep in east Delhi’s Karkardooma village, the police said on Monday. Sonam Joshi, 30, was found lying in a pool of blood with multiple stab injuries when the police reached the crime spot following a PCR call on Sunday morning. Originally from Lucknow in Uttar Pradesh, Sonam worked as a full-time domestic help in Noida. She recently moved to the city and had been staying at the house of her sister-in-law, police officers said. Senior police officers, along with the Crime Team and the Forensic Science Laboratory team, inspected the scene and collected evidence. During the investigation, the police found that the accused, Anuj Joshi, had purchased a knife in Lucknow and travelled to Delhi by bus. “He reached Karkardooma village at around 5.40 a.m. on Sunday, entered the room where Sonam was sleeping and stabbed her,” said Rajendra Prasad Meena, Deputy Commissioner of Police (Shahdara). “After the attack, the accused concealed the knife in a plastic bag inside the room,” said the DCP. While he was trying to flee, family members and neighbours caught him. Police said he also attempted to attack some of them with the knife before being restrained. They alerted the police, following which he was taken into custody and the knife used in the crime was recovered from him. Mr. Anuj, also a resident of Lucknow, earned his livelihood by operating an ice-cream cart there. According to the police, he was earlier married to one Jyoti, with whom he has two children. Following his divorce, he married Sonam and the couple have three children. All five children are currently staying in Lucknow. Police have registered a case of murder against him and investigating the motive behind the crime. Published - June 29, 2026 10:07 pm IST
