A small cargo vessel, which departed from V.O. Chidambaranar Port on Saturday (June 27), developed cargo shift and flooding in multiple compartments while sailing off Tiruchendur coast, and was brought back to the port with the help of Indian Coast Guard (ICG).The vessel was carrying goods to Maldives. In a ‘X’ post the ICG stated, “Responding swiftly to a distress call from MV SITTHAA due to flooding in multiple compartments off Tiruchendur coast on June 27, ICG ship Athulya rendered immediate assistance.”The post added that ICG’s specialist boarding team coordinated with salvage experts, supervised emergency repairs and ensured dewatering operations, and flooding remained under control.Subsequently, the vessel was advised to proceed to V.O.C. Port for sustainable repair. However, a port source said improper lashing of cargo, combined with rough sea conditions, had also contributed to the difficulty in navigation.
