TORONTO — As they get ready to help the Canadian men’s basketball team qualify for the 2027 World Cup, Shai Gilgeous-Alexander and Dillon Brooks have been dabbling in some soccer.The pair, along with Atlanta’s Nickeil Alexander-Walker, addressed the media before Canada Basketball summer training camp on Monday morning, saying that they have been watching the Canadian senior men’s soccer team’s unprecedented run to the round of 16 at the FIFA World Cup.Canada beat South Africa 1-0 in the round of 32 on Sunday, the country’s first-ever win in a knockout game. Before this World Cup, the men’s team had never recorded a point in two previous trips to the event, losing all six of their matches. Canada went 1-1-1 in group play before Sunday’s win.“I’ve been watching their games. Their success has been inspiring,” Gilgeous-Alexander said. “To see the growth of their program, where it has come in a short amount of time, the growth of the players, it’s been inspiring. It’s been fun. It makes me proud to be Canadian.”Canada will play the winner of Monday’s match between Morocco and the Netherlands.“It’s been great. I went to the game in Toronto (against Bosnia-Herzegovina),” Brooks said. “I went to Vancouver. I know they’re probably ecstatic for the success that they’ve had. The support is fully here throughout the whole country no matter what. I can’t wait to see (how) they play in the next round.”
