A parliamentary panel on interstate water resources held a meeting of officials from both Kerala and Tamil Nadu regarding the Mullaperiyar dam at Munnar here on Monday. According to officials, department secretaries of both States attended the panel’s meeting. Central Water Resources Standing Committee Chairperson Rajeev Pratap Rudy, MP, led the session.Mr. Rudy told the media that a Supreme Court-constituted panel was already looking into the issue. Several MPs from Kerala and Tamil Nadu had already raised concerns regarding Mullaperiyar with the panel, he said. “It is not actually a dispute, but a matter under negotiation. The Union government is aware of the issue. This is a very important meeting that is under scrutiny, and we expect the best possible outcome out of it,” said Mr. Rudy. “We are working towards whatever is good for the people in the southern region of the country,” he added. During the meeting, it is learned that Kerala’s representatives demanded the construction of a new dam at Mullaperiyar. Rajya Sabha MP Jebi Mather attended the meeting.
