New Zealand have become the first side to come from behind and win a three-match Test series in England after thrashing their hosts by 160 runs at Trent Bridge. The tourists prevailed with ease on day five on a deteriorating pitch despite being forced to lean on a much changed bowling attack, with injuries and a concussion having eaten into captain Tom Latham’s options. Having reduced England to 103-4 overnight, they completed the job a little over an hour after lunch with only Jamie Smith, with 60, offering much resistance. It is only New Zealand’s fourth series win in England following successes in 1986, 1999 and, in a two-match series, 2021.“It’s a really special moment,” said Latham at the post-match presentation. “It’s been a whole squad effort throughout the three games, and we’ve managed to stick to a style that we’ve been really proud of. It’s been a little bit more old-school Test cricket than what it has been probably traditionally over the last three years. To be standing here in this position, it’s really pleasing.“Different guys have stood up throughout this series when the team has needed it. I’m really proud of the guys.”Tom Latham lifts the Crowe-Thorpe trophy (Gareth Copley/Getty Images)New Zealand’s victory is all more remarkable given they lost their premier batter, Kane Williamson, after he announced his retirement in the wake of the heavy defeat in the first Test at Lord’s. They were denied key players Matt Henry and Glenn Phillips in the decider through injury, and opted to rest Kyle Jamieson due to concerns over his work load after the first two games.
