Sold-out performances, packed venues and nearly 12,000 visitors to the Village Green marked a vibrant start to the 2026 National Arts Festival, with organisers hailing the opening weekend as a strong sign of South Africans’ enduring appetite for the arts.

The 2026 edition of the National Arts Festival is running from June 25 to July 5, 2026.

Festival CEO Monica Newton said the enthusiastic response from audiences had exceeded expectations and reflected the strength of this year’s programme.

“What we have seen in this first weekend is a hopeful indication of South African audiences’ ongoing appetite for the arts. The quality of the work, and the engagement with that work, at the National Arts Festival is genuinely extraordinary. We are proud of every artist who has brought their work here and grateful to every audience member who has met it with such generosity.”

Accommodation across Makhanda was fully booked as festivalgoers flocked to the city, while the Village Green attracted close to 12,000 visitors over the opening weekend, helped by favourable winter weather.
