One person has been confirmed dead while another is battling for survival after a shooting at San Pedro Square, a popular entertainment district in San Jose, California, that has served as one of the city's FIFA World Cup fan zones.

The shooting occurred on Sunday, although no World Cup match was being screened at the venue at the time, according to Reuters.

Sunday's only tournament fixture had ended at about 2 p.m. local time, hours before the shooting incident occurred.

According to San Jose police, officers responded to reports of gunfire and found two victims at the scene.

One of them was pronounced dead immediately, while the second victim was rushed to a nearby hospital with life-threatening injuries.
