Filming for Riptide starring Jo Joyner and Ciarán Griffiths took place in Australia12:29, 29 Jun 2026Riptide is returning to Channel 5 this week, four years after it first aired. The psychological thriller follows newlyweds Alison and Sean, whose picture-perfect life is thrown into chaos when Sean fails to return home from a morning surf. The four-part drama stars EastEnders and Ackley Bridge actor Jo Joyner, Shameless and The Flats star Ciarán Griffiths, Peter O’Brien, recognised for Neighbours, The Unusual Suspects, and Outlander star David Berry. But another star of the show is Riptide's location, thanks to the stunning coastal backdrops and an ocean-side house the cast called "phenomenal".Riptide was filmed on location in Melbourne and Victoria in Australia over a few weeks in August 2022. Many of the cast, at the time of filming four years ago, spoke about the stunning houses used as the characters' homes.Benny Turland, who plays Ethan Weston in the show, said of Alison and Sean's ocean-side house: "It was so beautiful. It was very cold! Because of that ocean, the wind coming in was icy, and we have a different kind of weather zone in Melbourne."It’s like a wind tunnel and you can get four seasons in one day which can be frustrating to shoot. You'll be covered in jackets with hot water bottles and umbrellas one minute, and the next minute the sun's out and you're sweating! But, yeah, the location was phenomenal."I've never been in a place like that ever before so that was really exciting. We’d done our rehearsals beforehand and when we got there it suddenly felt real. It definitely helped to get into character, being in this phenomenal house with that view of the ocean. It was pretty spectacular."Some scenes were shot at Network 10 studios in Nunawading, Melbourne, which were also used to produce Neighbours.Speaking about filming in Australia, Jo Joyner, who plays Alison, said: "I really, really fell for Melbourne in a big way – it was honestly amazing. I could live there. I will always have a soft spot for the place now."Meanwhile, David Berry, who plays Dan Burrell, said of the "incredible sunsets" in Melbourne: "Looking out and seeing the sun setting over the water, and the red in the sky, it did make me fall in love with Melbourne."It's not the Australia that many people understand as their idea of what Australia is. In a lot of people’s minds you’ve got Sydney harbour, the Great Barrier Reef – these are things often seen in Australian films – but Melbourne has its own beautiful landscapes that I don’t really think people have really come to appreciate exist in Australia."It’s cold, it’s moody, it’s misty, it’s raining. And it’s also sometimes bright and beautiful, and it has so many different pockets of natural beauty that were unique to me, and will be unique to audiences as they can fall in love with Australia in a completely different way than they’ve come to imagine it."Article continues belowRiptide will repeat on Channel 5 on Monday, June 29 at 9pm.
