The Boston Red Sox are officially past the halfway mark of the season, one in which they shocked the baseball world by firing manager Alex Cora and six coaches in April. Yet, their trade deadline intentions still remain unclear. The Red Sox have been trending towards selling as they sit in the cellar of the American League East, but are coming off a four-game sweep of the New York Yankees and chief baseball officer Craig Breslow has maintained he’s still hoping to add. That sliver of hope remains in large part because 11 AL teams sit at or below .500 making a wild-card berth a slim possibility. That’s making the seller’s market thin and the buyer’s market robust, presenting a unique opportunity for the Red Sox. If they sell, there figures to be high demand for veterans like Aroldis Chapman, Sonny Gray and Willson Contreras. Here’s where things currently stand:Record: 36-46Record this time last season: 40-42Standing: last in the AL EastPlayoff odds: 15.1 percent (FanGraphs), 21 percent (Baseball Reference)If the season ended today: Eliminated from playoff contentionBiggest series between now and the deadline: Realistically, every series is big for the Red Sox at this point as they need to prove they can win. But they do play key a four-game set right out of the All-Star break against the Tampa Bay Rays, including a doubleheader on the first day back to make up for an earlier rainout. It will be the first of three straight divisional series before the team’s third trip to the West Coast in six weeks.
