Municipalities in the Toronto area are grappling with the soaring costs that come with mounting patriotic displays of fireworks.
The past few years of chaos at Oakville’s Canada Day event, where hundreds of teens gathered and set off fireworks at each other and bystanders, almost led to this year’s waterfront display being cancelled entirely.
“We’ve had people get hit with fireworks. I’ve been hit with fireworks,” said Oakville councillor Sean O’Meara. “Businesses have had fireworks shot into them. It’s, kind of, anarchy.”
