According to the SJCWG, Lichuma was unable to speak when he was found, raising fears over the severity of the abuse he allegedly suffered while in captivity.

Human rights organisations have renewed concerns over alleged enforced disappearances and torture in Kenya after activist Davis Lichuma was found alive days after he reportedly vanished following anti-government protests in Nairobi.

Lichuma, who had been missing since demonstrations near the Kenyan Parliament, was reportedly discovered in critical condition at Kenyatta National Hospital (KNH) before being transferred to Nairobi Women's Hospital for specialised medical treatment, according to Kenya’s Capital FM.

The Social Justice Centres Working Group (SJCWG), which confirmed his whereabouts, alleged that the activist had been abducted, tortured, and abandoned at the hospital.

The group called for an independent probe into the circumstances surrounding his disappearance, insisting that those responsible must be brought to justice.
