Ukraine once had more than 100 distinct embroidery techniques, but most of them have been lost, largely due to Soviet policies.

Lviv-based designer and traditional embroidered shirt (vyshyvanka) collector Khrystyna Rachytska said this in an interview with Ukrinform.

Rachytska recalled that her fascination with embroidery began while studying at the Lviv National Academy of Arts.

"My 70-year-old professor once told me that a single human lifetime is not enough to fully understand and study embroidery. I was in my early twenties at the time, and those words surprised me. But I very quickly realized how true they were and just how profound and limitless this art form is," she said.

According to Rachytska, a significant portion of Ukraine's traditional embroidery techniques has not survived to the present day.
