White port and tonic puts Portuguese twist on the classic aperitif

Product Review

White port and tonic has moved from bars in Portugal to wine lists across Europe as drinkers look for an alternative to the gin and tonic. Built with dry white port, tonic water and plenty of ice, the Porto Tónico has become one of the country’s best-known mixed drinks and continues to attract new followers.

The serve combines the freshness of tonic with the fruit and nut notes of white port. It is most often prepared with a dry style of white port, chilled tonic water and a garnish of citrus or fresh mint.

While port has long been associated with after-dinner drinking, white port has found a different role. Producers and bartenders have promoted it as an aperitif for warm weather, with the Porto Tónico becoming the drink most closely linked to that style.
