George Russell produced a timely victory from pole in Austria to close the gap on championship leader Kimi Antonelli and strengthen his title hopes on a day Max Verstappen enjoyed his best race of the season to finish second. In a race full of overtakes and intriguing strategies in the Styrian mountains, the Mercedes driver was out in front for the majority of the race and largely unaffected as others battled for position. Teammate Kimi Antonelli came home third with just two seconds separating the top three, while it was a disappointing race for Ferrari duo Lewis Hamilton and Charles Leclerc as they finished fifth and eighth respectively. The action-packed opening laps had Hamilton overtaking Leclerc to move second and Verstappen springing from fifth to third, with Antonelli dropping to fifth. On Lap 11, Verstappen and Hamilton exchanged places in an exhilarating battle. The Ferrari driver held off the Dutchman before he pitted first in what was a three-stop strategy. All the while, Russell extended his advantage.Hamilton and Verstappen were wheel-to-wheel again on Lap 22. This time, an aggressive Verstappen made the decisive move in the middle sector and went on to hunt down Russell but getting the better of Russell was too much of an ask as the Mercedes driver secured his second win of the season to move second in the drivers’ championship, 40 points behind teammate Antonelli.Madeline Coleman, at the Red Bull Ring, and Alex Kalinauckas analyze the key talking points.Verstappen overcomes qualifying crashRewind 24 hours. Verstappen was on the brink of being knocked out of Q2 in qualifying, escaping into the final qualifying shootout by 0.040 seconds. Then, on his final Q3 flyer, where he looked like he could contend for pole position, the Dutchman crashed into the barriers. It wasn’t a Verstappen mistake — it was a car issue, which was later confirmed by team principal Laurent Mekies. The team rebuilt the car, and Verstappen lined up to start fifth, staring down the rears of the Mercedes and Ferrari duos. Those two teams have been ahead of Red Bull throughout the season, but the team brought upgrades to Austria — seven updated parts, to be exact.Verstappen has long thrived at this track, but could he overcome the previous performance gap? One thing to his advantage was he either opt for the medium-hard-medium tire strategy (if two-stopping) or medium-hard-hard, the latter other front-runners were forced to do due to how they allocated their tires across the weekend’s sessions. That became a strategic advantage.Max Verstappen celebrates in parc ferme in Red Bull’s home race. (Mark Thompson / Getty Images)The Red Bull driver faced multiple tangles with Hamilton. Their first pit stops happened within six laps of each other, with Hamilton diving in first, and the fight of the world champions reignited once again when Verstappen rejoined behind the Briton.Lap 22 became the decisive moment where Verstappen closed down the gap. He made a late lunge on Hamilton at Turn 3, but the Ferrari came back by a corner later. The Dutchman, though, overtook Hamilton at Turn 6 and stuck the move, setting his sights on the Mercedes duo.Verstappen then began chipping away at Russell’s lead, the gap sitting at just over three seconds on Lap 35. That gap was down to 1.5 seconds four laps later. Russell dove into the pits, attempting to undercut, while Verstappen extended his stint massively, eventually swapping for hard tires on Lap 51 and facing a 10-second gap to Russell. It became a waiting game. Was the strategy to extend the middle stint and end on the hard tire wise? A wide moment by Russell at Turn 1 led to the gap between him and Verstappen dropping to seven seconds, with the Red Bull going 1.1 seconds quicker the previous lap. But it wasn’t just Russell and Verstappen in the battle; Antonelli was just a few seconds behind the Dutchman and going the quickest among the top three.Verstappen ultimately couldn’t close the gap to Russell, but second at Red Bull Ring marked his second podium finish of the season — and on a weekend when questions and rumors about his future once again emerged. Red Bull looked competitive with its upgrades, a crucial component in this equation.
