KARACHI — Three members of Pakistan's paramilitary Rangers force were killed and four others wounded after militants launched an assault on a regional Rangers headquarters in the southern port city of Karachi, the military said on Sunday.According to the military, an attacker drove an explosives-laden vehicle into the compound late Saturday, triggering a fierce gun battle between militants and security forces.Security forces killed three attackers and captured a fourth, who was wounded. The military identified the captured suspect as an Afghan national.It said operations were continuing to locate and eliminate any remaining accomplices and vowed that Pakistan would respond to those responsible for the attack.The militant group Jamaat-ul-Ahrar, a breakaway faction of the Pakistani Taliban, claimed responsibility shortly after the assault.Pakistan has carried out airstrikes inside Afghanistan in recent years, saying it targeted militants responsible for cross-border attacks. The Taliban-led government in Kabul has consistently denied allowing Afghan territory to be used for attacks against Pakistan.President Asif Ali Zardari paid tribute to the three Rangers personnel killed in the attack, expressing condolences to their families and wishing the wounded a speedy recovery. He praised the sacrifices of Pakistan's security forces in combating militancy and reaffirmed the country's commitment to eliminating terrorism.Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif also condemned the attack and commended security forces for repelling the assault.
