“The Defence Investment Plan will prioritise getting the latest kit into the hands of our frontline forces"

The British defence ministry announced it will spend almost €580 million on drones, speed boats and landing vessels for its special military forces. But a general defence spending plan has still not been released.

“We’re investing in new lethal strike drones, high-speed boats and amphibious transport ships to give our Commandos the equipment they need to stay ahead of adversaries and defend us,” Defence Secretary Dan Jarvis announced in a press release on Sunday.

Two weeks ago, defence secretary John Healy resigned in protest over a lack of funding for a delayed Defence Investment Plan. Shortly after, Armed Forces Minister Al Carns quit as well.

In his resignation letter, Healy lamented a revised version of the investment plan, which he said fell “well short of what is required for defence and the country at this dangerous time”.
