Industry executives said that products linked to refreshment, hydration and impulse buying continued to perform well, but cooling appliances, particularly air conditioners, failed to see the usual seasonal demand.Godrej Enterprises Group Business Head and EVP (Appliances Business) Kamal Nandi told PTI that performance differed across appliance categories. While refrigerators continued to witness robust demand across both premium and mass-market segments, washing machine sales have started improving with the arrival of the monsoon."Refrigerator is doing very well, and demand is high both for mass and premium segments. Washing machine demand is also picking up as we are entering the monsoon season," Nandi told PTI.Air conditioners, however, are feeling the heat."June across the country, including north India, AC sales have gone down. At an industry level, sales have declined," he said.Nandi said changing weather patterns, including thunderstorms and cooler evenings across several regions, reduced the need for air conditioning. He also pointed to inflationary pressures, which have led many consumers to postpone discretionary purchases."Consumers are also down-trading to air coolers and fans because ACs have become quite expensive," Nandi said, adding that prices of air conditioners have increased by 18-20 per cent over the past few years following repeated price hikes.A senior executive from a leading room air-conditioner brand, who did not wish to be named, also described the season as weaker than expected."The season was not so good, especially in June. However, on a year-to-date basis, the industry has still reported value growth of around 35 per cent, aided by higher prices and premiumisation," the executive said. While appliance makers saw uneven demand, beverage companies continued to benefit from summer consumption.Summer foods sooth the heatCoca-Cola India and South West Asia vice president, customer development, Abhishek Gupta, said demand remained strong, supported by multiple consumption occasions."We continue to see solid summer demand, driven by immediate consumption, smaller pack formats, quick commerce, and on-the-go occasions," Gupta said.He said the company and its bottling partners are increasing the availability of chilled drinks through investments in cooling infrastructure and wider distribution. The momentum was also visible in the dairy business.Mother Dairy Managing Director Jayatheertha Chary said the company's fresh dairy and ice cream portfolio recorded volume growth of more than 30 per cent during the June quarter compared with the corresponding period last year.According to Chary, demand for ice creams, curd and dairy beverages remained strong, while consumers also showed increasing preference for value-added dairy products.Havmor Ice Cream managing director Debabrata Mukherjee said single-serve products continued to fuel growth during the quarter."Categories such as cones, sticks, and single-serve cups are seeing accelerated off-take, especially driven by quick commerce and immediate consumption occasions," he said.Demand also remained healthy for traditional summer food products.DS Group Business Head (Spices) Sandeep Ghosh said consumption of products including raita masala, chhaachh masala, jal jeera and black salt increased during the season as consumers continued to opt for traditional hydration and digestive products."This revival of hyper-local, time-tested flavours is particularly striking as it cuts across both rural markets and urban households, proving that traditional Indian products remain favourable during the summer months," he said.
