Whether it is USMNT supporters belting out Take Me Home, Country Roads in Seattle or England fans giving their best rendition of Wonderwall in Dallas, the music at the World Cup has captured the imagination and created plenty of viral moments.These are not spontaneous, however, and there is a detailed process that has gone into determining what tracks are played, who selects them, and how often they will be heard.Although FIFA, world football’s governing body and the tournament’s organisers, are largely responsible for curating the track lists along with its stadium entertainment team, the national sides also have a say on what is being heard through the sound system.The music choices are split into four categories, starting with a signature track, which is played after the starting XIs are named.Each team then has a specific song played when they are warming up, another for when they score, and a post-match choice should they win.The song choices are monitored throughout the World Cup, with FIFA noting what is working in-stadium and leading to fan engagement inside the venue, many of which have gone viral on social media.After England’s first match, for example, the players stood in front of their supporters as they sang Wonderwall by Oasis, with Jude Bellingham and Harry Kane soaking up the atmosphere and singing it back.Wonderwall, however, does not appear on England’s list of songs, nor does Take Me Home, Country Roads from the USMNT’s perspective, but they were both played because they were viewed as being popular online and would work well with both sets of supporters.One memorable song choice is U.S.A. — chosen by Bosnia — by Dubioza Kolektiv, with the lyrics including the following lines: “I feel like a slave on a minimal wage.
